AL MAR Guesthouse

São Luís, Alentejo, Portugal

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Alentejo, surrounded by fragrant lemon trees and birdsong, overlooking colorful neighboring houses and the beautiful landscape, lies the Al Mar Guesthouse - a place to relax, enjoy, and unwind.

The guesthouse & café is a passion project run by Jennifer and Eyal, a German-Israeli couple with over 20 years of hospitality experience. The lovingly restored house, dating back to 1937, combines traditional adobe architecture with natural design and sustainable materials such as wood, clay, and linen.

The three apartments—each with a kitchen and individual style—invite you to linger. In the Rubi, traditional tiles enchant residents, in the Oliva, pastel tones predominate, and the loft, with its high ceilings, is particularly airy. The rooms are pleasantly minimalist in design and yet very comfortable and cozy.

The café serves homemade soul food with seasonal ingredients from the local market. Eyal's cuisine ranges from freshly baked focaccia to the rotating "Prato do Dia" (a traditional dish). The coffee is served with the finest coffee from a small roastery in Lisbon.

Sustainability isn't a trend here, but a lived philosophy. Anyone who wants to can help with the harvest. In the surrounding area, there are waterfalls, the Rio Mira, and the Rota Vicentina, a wonderful coastal hiking trail. Relaxation options such as yoga, massage, or sound healing can be arranged. Once you've visited, you'll take a piece of the Alentejo home with you in your heart.

Sustainable

Architecture

The old walls were preserved during the restoration because they still offer the best cooling and energy efficiency. Local craftsmen and regional materials such as clay and wood were used.

Food

The café is a place of delicacies. Sixty percent of the food on offer is sourced from local farmers, and the coffee comes from a small roastery in Lisbon. Most of the leftovers end up in the compost for the garden.

Environment

Upon check-in, guests are invited to help themselves to the garden and enjoy the fruits and herbs. They are also asked to separate their waste and use the compost. Freshly filtered drinking water, solar panels, and organic cleaning products are just as much a matter of course as local and regional products for the café.

Well-Being

On request, contact can be made for yoga, breathwork, or sound healing courses. In the region, there is a wide range of different yoga styles, massages, and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine).
